A lot of Hillsborough was built out as country estates in the early twentieth century, and plenty of those houses are still standing with their original glazing: leaded panes, divided light casements, French doors in runs of six or eight. That glass is old, sometimes wavy, and set in wood frames that have been painted many times over. It wants hand work and a gentle blade, not speed. The Carolands, the enormous Beaux Arts chateau off Remillard Drive, is the landmark people reach for when they describe the town, and while most houses here are nowhere near that scale, a good number of them are closer to it than to an ordinary suburban lot.
