The Victorian and Edwardian houses in neighbourhoods like Noe Valley, the Mission, Pacific Heights, and around Alamo Square are full of original double hung wood sash, much of it in three sided bays that stick out over the street. The panes are often old, the frames have been painted many times, and some sash no longer opens the way it was built to. It is slow, careful hand work. Where the upper floors are too high for a pole and the sash will not open, we will talk through the options with you at the quote rather than promise something we cannot do safely.

Out in the Sunset and the Richmond the houses are newer, many of them the attached single family homes built in rows through the 1930s and 1940s, and the problem is the fog. The avenues nearest Ocean Beach sit in the marine layer for weeks at a time, and glass there picks up salt and damp that the sunnier eastern neighbourhoods do not. It cleans off normally but it comes back faster, and west facing windows want more frequent attention than the rest of the house.

The practical side of the city is access. Most San Francisco houses are attached, with no side yard, so rear windows are reached through the house or from a back garden. Parking is tight and streets are steep. We plan for all of that before the day, and we are honest that San Francisco is a longer run from Belmont than the cities in the middle of our range, so we schedule it in blocks.
