Mountain View is the southern end of our route. Most people know it as the home of Google, but the houses are what matter to us, and the city has a wider mix of them than its reputation suggests.

Monta Loma has one of the best known groups of Eichler homes in the area: single storey post and beam houses with floor to ceiling glass and, in many cases, an atrium in the middle. As in Palo Alto next door, an Eichler is priced by the run of glass rather than by the number of windows, because a glass wall counts as one opening and cleans like several. Old Mountain View, around Castro Street, is the opposite end of the range, with older bungalows and cottages and smaller, more traditional windows.

Between the two there are neighbourhoods of mid century ranch homes like Waverly Park and Cuesta Park, and a great many townhomes and newer multi storey buildings, especially toward the north of the city. Townhome glass is often high and stacked on three floors, which is where a water fed pole earns its place.

Mountain View is also sunny and flat enough that a lot of houses have solar panels. Dust, pollen, and bird droppings on panels cut into what they produce, and we clean them with soft brushes and purified water, never pressure washers or household cleaners.
