Afternoon wind pulls the marine layer in from the coast across the low ground around the city, and it brings grit, damp, and salt with it. Windows on the western and hillside elevations in South San Francisco get dirty on a shorter cycle than the same glass would further down the Peninsula, and screens in particular fill with fine dust.
